Sony’s PS5 has become its highest-selling video game console ever

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) PlayStation 5 has become its hottest selling video game console ever, with more than 10 million PS5 consoles having been purchased globally since its release in November.

“While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply,” SIE chief Jim Ryan said in a release.

“I want gamers to know that while we continue to face unique challenges throughout the world that affect our industry and many others, improving inventory levels remains a top priority for SIE,” he added, likely referring to the global computer chip shortage that has hobbled the production of a wide range of electronic goods.

The video game industry, however, has seen booming growth during the pandemic—according to market research company NPD Group, spending on video games in the United States reached $28.9 billion in the first half of this year, an increase of 15% year on year.

The amount of money spent on video game hardware in the US in June alone more than doubled from the same month the year before to $401 million.

“PlayStation 5 remains the fastest unit selling console hardware platform in US history,” said NPD.
