The Social Security System (SSS) announced a record-high increase in new memberships, with 2.4 million new registrants as of the end of July 2024. This marks a significant 165% jump compared to the 923,000 new members recorded during the same period last year.
SSS President and CEO Rolando Macasaet attributed the surge to the agency’s intensified membership and coverage campaigns across the country. “In the first six months alone, we surpassed our yearly target of two million new members,” said Macasaet.
The increase in membership means more Filipinos will gain access to essential social security benefits, offering financial protection during times of uncertainty.
SSS Executive Vice President Voltaire Agas highlighted a sharp rise in self-employed members, which surged by 273%, from 112,000 in 2023 to 419,000 in 2024. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) memberships also more than doubled, reaching 10,300 from just over 5,000 the previous year.
Luzon accounted for the highest number of new members at 882,000, followed by the National Capital Region with 693,000, and Mindanao and Visayas with 436,000 and 417,000, respectively. SSS also saw over 10,000 new members from international operations.
Macasaet expressed optimism about reaching four to five million new members by the end of 2024, promising continued efforts to expand membership.
