The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has announced that construction of the Metro Manila leg of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) is slated to begin in October 2024. PNR Chairman Michael Ted Macapagal confirmed that preparatory work, including fencing activities, track removal, and clearing operations, are currently underway and expected to be completed by October, paving the way for the construction phase.
This segment of the NSCR will feature both elevated and at-grade tracks and stations, extending from Blumentritt in Manila to Sucat in Parañaque City. The commencement of this project follows the suspension of the PNR’s Tutuban-Alabang operations on May 28, to accommodate the new developments.
The NSCR, a major infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity in the region, will eventually stretch over 147 kilometers from Clark, Pampanga to Calamba, Laguna, comprising a total of 37 stations. The construction of the Alabang-Calamba leg of the railway began in July of the previous year.
Chairman Macapagal provided an update on the entire network, indicating that the northern sections—from Tutuban to Malolos, and Malolos to Clark—are over 50% complete, with the stations themselves nearing 80% to 85% completion. He expressed confidence that trial runs could potentially begin by 2026 or 2027, with full operations expected before the 2028 elections.
Upon completion, the NSCR will be serviced by a fleet of 60 electric multiple-train units, significantly enhancing the public transportation infrastructure and providing a reliable and efficient commuting option for residents across the regions served.
