According to a study by Milieu Insight, a consumer research and analytics firm, Filipinos are the biggest shoppers of second-hand fashion in the SEA region.

The study was done last May and found out that shopping for second-hand clothing is a common activity in the Philippines, with 62% of the consumers in the region having previously shopped for second-hand clothing.

Although the Philippines holds the number one spot in the region, environmental impact is not the main driver of this activity, says the study.

More than eight in 10 or around 83% of Filipino consumers have said to previously bought second-hand fashion goods.

This study was done to understand how Southeast Asian people view second-hand fashion.

In other Southeast Asian countries, less than half of their respondents stated that they like second-hand fashion, with Thailand having 48%, Malaysia and Indonesia with 31%, and Singapore with 21%.

Generally, 37% of consumers in the region have stated that they like second-hand fashion.

When it boils down to the reason for shopping for second-hand clothing items, 75% of respondents in the Philippines said that the top reason was the price being cheaper than brand new items. The second reason indicated by 60% of the respondents would be the preference to look for branded items at lower prices. The third reason at 47% would be the style of second-hand fashion.

Other reasons cited by the Filipino respondents were the big varieties offered by the second-hand fashion shops, joining friends and family while they shop, and the last being the element of surprise.
