SunAsia Secures Contracts for 1.3GW Floating Solar Project on Laguna Lake

SunAsia Energy Inc. has obtained all 10 Solar Energy Operating Contracts (SEOCs) necessary to develop over 1,000 megawatts of floating solar facilities on Laguna Lake. This significant milestone was announced during a site visit to their pilot floating solar facility in Bay town, Laguna, where the Department of Energy (DOE) officially completed the granting of the contracts.

Each SEOC will allow for a 25-year operational period. This achievement will enable SunAsia and its partner, Blueleaf Energy Philippines, to develop 1,318 megawatts (MW), or 1.3 gigawatts (GW), of floating solar farms across Laguna Lake. The project involves constructing 10 blocks of floating solar facilities, each covering 100 hectares, in the towns of Cabuyao, Sta. Rosa, Calamba, Victoria, and Bay.

Key Points:

  • SunAsia’s Milestone: Secured all 10 SEOCs for 1.3GW floating solar project.
  • Project Scope: 10 floating solar blocks, 100 hectares each.
  • Locations: Cabuyao, Sta. Rosa, Calamba, Victoria, and Bay towns.
  • Operational Timeline: Construction starts next year; commercial operations by 2026.
  • Community Impact: Significant job creation, SME boost through tourism, and greenhouse gas reduction.

SunAsia President and CEO Tetchi Capellan emphasized the project’s alignment with clean energy goals, noting its potential to generate sustainable employment, support small-medium enterprises through tourism, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The pilot project in Barangay San Antonio, Bay, featuring 15-kilowatt floating solar panels, has already demonstrated the benefits by helping the Barangay Hall cut electricity costs by 50%. The project also showcases SunAsia’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, with local hires for construction and maintenance.
