Sweden and Philippines Partner to Promote Sustainable Mining Practices

The Embassy of Sweden in Manila and Business Sweden have launched a collaborative initiative aimed at advancing sustainable mining practices in the Philippines. On October 18, 2024, representatives from Business Sweden and the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Makati City to formalize this partnership.

Harald Fries, chargé d’affaires at the Swedish Embassy, emphasized the goal of redefining mining to ensure sustainability, safety, and economic viability. Sweden’s State Secretary for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Håkan Jevrell, highlighted the crucial role of sustainable mining in addressing climate change and boosting economic growth. Jevrell noted that mining is key to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions and supporting various sectors worldwide.

Ramon Santiago, PMSEA board member, expressed the association’s commitment to improving mining safety and environmental standards in the Philippines through responsible practices.

The partnership will also feature at the upcoming 70th Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference in November 2024, providing a platform for showcasing sustainable solutions in the mining sector.
