Despite the recent increase in the flag-down rate to ₱50 for both airconditioned and non-airconditioned taxis, some taxi drivers believe this amount is insufficient and are calling for a hike to ₱60.
Taxi driver Conrado shared that many passengers are unaware of the new rate, which was implemented following a Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) order earlier this year.
“Some passengers get upset or even refuse to ride when they learn about the ₱50 rate, but others are fine once it’s explained,” Conrado said.
Only taxis with recalibrated meters can charge the new flag-down rate. However, some operators have avoided recalibration due to its cost.
“It’s expensive to reseal the meters, especially for owners with multiple units. They feel the ₱50 increase doesn’t make up for the expense,” said taxi driver Ruel.
Bong Suntay, president of the Philippine National Taxi Operators Association, echoed the sentiment, saying that the originally proposed ₱60 flag-down rate would have been more beneficial.
“While the increase is appreciated, gasoline prices continue to rise, leaving us in the same situation,” added taxi driver Rufino.
Some commuters find the higher fare beyond their budget, while others prefer to use transport network vehicle services (TNVS) for their commuting needs.
