Telegram Debuts TON-Linked In-App Digital Payment Token ‘Stars’

Messaging app Telegram has introduced a new digital payment feature called “Telegram Stars,” enabling users to make in-app purchases on both iOS and Android devices. This development was announced by the firm’s CEO, Pavel Durov, on Thursday.

Features and Benefits of Telegram Stars

With the launch of Stars, mini app developers can now accept payments for digital services. These developers can exchange their Stars for Toncoin (TON), the native token of The Open Network, via the exchange platform Fragment.

“Mini app developers can withdraw their Stars via Fragment using TON,” Durov stated. “They can also use Stars to further promote their apps on Telegram — on preferential terms!”

This move coincides with the growing popularity of Telegram’s mini apps, attracting millions of users daily. One notable mini app, Hamster Kombat, has recently gained significant traction. In this simulator game, players can enhance their exchange income by purchasing “upgrade cards” and completing quests. Hamster Kombat has now become the No.1 channel on Telegram in terms of user count.

Impact on TON and Market Position

On Wednesday, Toncoin saw a 10% surge, positioning it among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. This surge reflects the positive impact of Telegram’s integration with TON.

Durov highlighted the rapid growth of mini apps, making Telegram the “main destination” for launching new apps. He noted, “Stars and ad subsidies bring this to a new level – unprecedented in the history of social media.”

Commission and Economic Incentives

Durov also mentioned that Apple and Google would take a 30% commission when users purchase Stars through their platforms. However, Telegram plans to subsidize ads bought with Telegram Stars, meaning app developers who reinvest Stars to promote their apps will avoid commission fees.

“As a result, launching apps on Telegram makes more economic sense than launching traditional mobile apps,” Durov added.

In April, Telegram partnered with Tether to launch USDT on the TON blockchain, aiming to foster greater crypto adoption through the messaging platform.
