The price of tomatoes at the Mangaldan Public Market in Pangasinan has surged to P120 per kilo, a significant increase from just P30 per kilo last week. Vendors attribute the sharp rise to a shortage caused by recent heavy rains, which damaged crops in the Ilocos Region.
Eva Nudo, a vendor, explained, “Because of the typhoon, many crops were destroyed, leading to a shortage and high prices.” Most tomatoes being sold now come from Nueva Ecija and Nueva Vizcaya, as local supply has been heavily impacted.
Despite the soaring prices, consumers like Dennis de Vera continue to buy tomatoes, although in smaller quantities. Prices are expected to normalize once weather conditions improve and local farms recover.
