Trump Exempts Smartphones, Computers from China Tariffs, Offering Relief to Tech Giants

In a major policy shift, President Donald Trump’s administration has granted tariff exemptions for smartphones, computers, and select electronics—mainly imported from China—easing pressure on tech companies like Apple and Dell.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection listed 20 tariff codes that are now excluded from the elevated duties. These include categories covering all computers, laptops, semiconductor devices, memory chips, and flat panel displays. The exclusions are retroactive to April 5.

Though no reason was provided, the move provides welcome relief to tech giants, particularly amid fears of skyrocketing prices. Industry analysts, including Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities, called it “the most bullish news we could have heard this weekend,” easing anxiety across the tech sector.

The exclusions also apply to Trump’s baseline 10% tariffs for most countries, benefiting imports like semiconductors from Taiwan and Apple iPhones made in India.

Despite the rollback, Trump’s earlier 20% China-related tariffs tied to the fentanyl crisis remain. A new investigation into semiconductor imports is also underway and could bring more tariffs.

The tariff pause seems to acknowledge consumer price sensitivity, with analysts warning that without the exemption, iPhones could’ve jumped from $1,599 to $2,300 under the 125% tariff rate.

Smartphones were the U.S.’s top import from China in 2024, totaling $41.7 billion. Apple has responded to tariff pressure by ramping up production in India and recently airlifting 600 tons of iPhones to the U.S.

While Trump seeks to realign trade policies, critics warn the tariff wars could risk a recession and shake investor confidence. Still, the president remains firm, maintaining a cordial stance with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while markets fluctuate under the uncertainty.
