Trump Slams Musk Over Tax-Cut Bill Opposition, Says “Very Disappointed”

U.S. President Donald Trump publicly rebuked Elon Musk on Thursday, expressing deep disappointment over the Tesla CEO’s opposition to his flagship tax-cut and spending legislation. Trump’s comments mark a sharp turn in their once-close relationship.

“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

The president suggested Musk’s criticism stems from frustration over the bill’s removal of electric vehicle tax credits—a major issue for Tesla. Musk, however, maintains that his opposition is rooted in concerns over the bill’s impact on the federal deficit.

Trump also speculated that Musk’s hostility may be due to his recent departure from the administration, saying, “People leave… and some miss it so badly they become hostile.”

While Trump was speaking, Musk took to X with sarcastic posts referencing the bill’s name, the “Big Beautiful Bill Act,” and called for cuts to “disgusting pork” in government spending.

Musk, once a prominent Trump ally who helped lead federal cost-cutting efforts, exited his post last week after falling short of his $2 trillion savings goal. His tenure sparked protests and controversy both in Washington and at Tesla sites.

Tesla shares slid nearly 6% following Trump’s remarks, continuing their decline amid the escalating feud.
