Twitter has announced that they will allow users to officially verify NFTs used for profile pictures. In the past, other users could right-click and copy someone else’s profile picture as proof of ownership couldn’t be shown without checking the Ethereum blockchain.
The feature debuted on Jan. 20th and is only available to paid subscribers of Twitter’s Blue Service. Those who possess NFT profile pictures will then be given a highlighted hexagonal border instead of the traditional circular ones. This move is arguably the most significant one Twitter has made in its expansion into the NFT space. In the past few years, Twitter has become the choice social media platform for those in the crypto industry.
However, as there is a potential for hackers to steal these images, Twitter has not confirmed how they will combat these risks.
According to Esther Crawford, the company’s product leader, Twitter is “positioning itself as the social network for the discovery, conversation, and education around NFT, blockchain, and crypto technology,”
“Crypto is a key pillar of Twitter’s future. We want to support this growing interest among creators to use decentralized apps to manage virtual goods and currencies,”
With NFTs continuing to take the crypto world by storm, social media companies have worked tirelessly to integrate them into their systems. Previously, Meta has reported that it will allow users to buy and sell NFTs on Facebook and Instagram marketplaces.
Additionally, Twitter announced that it will launch a new division focused on NFTs, crypto, and blockchain technology last November.
