Game industry giant, Ubisoft, has announced its plans to integrate NFTs into its games. The company has had several mainstream releases in the industry, including but not limited to the Assassin’s Creed saga and Far Cry. The NFTs to be released will be known as “Digits” and they will contain unique serial numbers making them tradeable in the crypto market.

The announcement came via social media as Ubisoft ‘tweeted’ that it will offer the tokens on its new platform [Ubisoft Quartz]. The platform will allow users to collect “the first playable and energy-efficient NFTs,” due to being stored on the Tezos blockchain. The blockchain is said to be more environmentally friendly, rendering environmental harm a non-issue.

“Ubisoft Quartz is a new experience for our players, built upon our vision of creating an ever-greater connection between you and the game worlds you love,” reads Ubisoft’s site. “It aims at offering you more autonomy and agency when interacting with the in-game items that help you craft your own story.”

The initial offerings for the NFTs will be released in the beta for “Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint”, come December 9, 2021. These tokens will feature in-game gear and can be purchased using cryptocurrency in any of the game’s launch countries. However, unlike other game skins, the serial numbers make these tokens “non-fungible” meaning each token is unique. The NFTs will also be available to anyone who uses Tezos, even to those who do not play Ghost Recon but the Digits used in-game will contain the previous owner’s Gamertag allowing for transactions to be more easily tracked.

The industry has not been entirely friendly to NFTs in mainstream games due to concerns regarding the environment, autonomy, and scammers. Popular communications platform, Discord, has had to revoke its plans to partner with Ethereum due to backlash from its primarily gamer-centric user base.
