According to the United Nations, international partners and governments should invest in sustainable food cold chains to lessen hunger, adapt to climate change, and provide job opportunities in light of the rise of global warming and food insecurity.

In the 27th Climate Change Conference, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) released their Sustainable Food Cold Chains report which discovered that food cold chains are needed to meet the obstacle of feeding an added two billion people by 2050 all while being mindful of increased greenhouse gas emissions and mobilizing the rural communities.

This report was made with the framework of the  UNEP-led Cool Coalition in partnership with FAO, Climate and Clean Air Coalition, UNEP OzonAction Programme, and the Ozone Secretariat.

“At a time when the international community must act to address the climate and food crises, sustainable food cold chains can make a massive difference,”  mentioned Executive Director of UNEP, Inger Andersen.

“They allow us to reduce food loss, improve food security, slow greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs, reduce poverty and build resilience—all in one fell swoop,” he adds.

The report shows that developing countries can save up to 144 million tons of food per year if they have the same food cold chain systems as developed countries.

“Sustainable food cold chains can make an important difference in our collective efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. All stakeholders can help implement the findings of this report, to transform agri-food systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable – for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life for all, leaving no one behind,” mentioned Director-General of FAO, Qu Dongyu.
