The Upper Wawa Dam, a key project under the national government’s initiative, is nearing completion and is set to significantly bolster water supply in Greater Metro Manila and its surrounding areas. As reported by Wawa JVCo Inc., a consortium led by Prime Infrastructure, the dam is currently 93% complete and stands as the largest water supply infrastructure built in the region in the last five decades.
This phase 2 of the Wawa Bulk Water Supply Project is anticipated to produce at least 710 million liters per day (MLD), offering a vital solution to the region’s water supply concerns, especially amidst the threat of El Niño-induced dry spells. By providing a steady source of raw water, the Upper Wawa Dam aims to reduce the area’s reliance on the older Angat-Iba System, enhancing both water security and climate change resilience.
The dam’s strategic importance is further highlighted by its potential to serve over 700,000 households, equating to roughly 3.5 million residents in the service area covered by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS). This coverage includes both the province of Rizal and parts of Cavite, with water distribution facilitated by two main concessionaires: Maynilad for the west zone and Manila Water for the east.
An active 30-year agreement exists between WawaJVCo and Manila Water, wherein 518 MLD of the dam’s total capacity will be allocated, leaving an excess supply of 192 MLD available for other needs.
The Upper Wawa Dam is lauded for its innovative design and construction using the latest technology, ensuring its long-term efficiency and reliability. With commercial operations expected to commence by late 2025, the project is seen as a critical step towards averting a water crisis in Metro Manila and adjacent provinces, promising enhanced water security and sustainability for millions of Filipinos.
