US Advocates Renewable Energy Storage to Boost Philippines’ Power Resilience

In the wake of a significant power outage impacting Panay Island and parts of Western Visayas, the United States is championing the adoption of renewable energy storage solutions in the Philippines. US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, Jose Fernandez, has actively engaged with Philippine Department of Energy officials to explore the integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power into the country’s energy infrastructure.

During a media roundtable in Makati City, Fernandez underscored the Philippines’ innate potential for harnessing renewable energy, citing its plentiful sunshine and substantial wind resources. He remarked, “The Philippines is tailor-made for renewable energy with abundant sunshine and ample wind. By turning our vulnerability into a competitive advantage, we can attract the energies of the future.”

Highlighting the strategic importance of renewable energy in mitigating power outages, Fernandez pointed out that battery storage is an essential component of the energy mix, ensuring stability during adverse weather conditions or periods of low wind. This conversation aligns with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s vision to diversify the Philippines’ energy portfolio, emphasizing renewable sources and considering the integration of nuclear power.

Fernandez also shed light on the broader economic implications of expanding renewable energy capabilities. He noted the potential of renewable energy to attract significant investments, especially from the US and other nations, into sectors like the semiconductor industry. This investment attraction is attributed to a synergy between the availability of clean energy and the industries of the future.

Despite the growing semiconductor industry in the Philippines and the high demand for Filipino workers in this sector, particularly in Taiwan, Fernandez acknowledged the need for further support. The US is committed to assisting in enhancing the semiconductor industry’s assembly, testing, and packaging capacities under the Chips Act. Additionally, the Philippines is set to receive strategic recommendations from the OECD to fortify its semiconductor ecosystem, with prompt implementation being a priority.

The discussions also touched upon the Civil Nuclear Cooperation Deal between the Philippines and the United States, a significant aspect of President Marcos’ meeting with President Joe Biden in the US last year. The dialogue on this deal continues to progress, marking a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship and energy cooperation between the two nations.
