The digital art collecting platform, Neon, launched the first NFT vending machine in New York City, as it plans to make art as easily accessible as soda and candy. However, the machine will not reveal which NFT the buyer will receive.

“It’s [for] the crypto curious, the people who tried to buy cryptocurrency or they were interested in buying an NFT, but they just hit too many barriers,” Neon CEO Kyle Zappitell said in an interview with Reuters, of the vending machine’s target customer.

The machine is located in a storefront in Lower Manhattan’s financial district with a sign outside saying “NFT ATM.” It looks similar to a regular vending machine but offers QR codes that come on slips in paper boxes.

When the QR codes are scanned, buyers can view their NFTs on any smartphone, laptop, or tablet with drops ranging from $5.99 – $420.69. The codes themselves give buyers an art piece that falls within two categories, either color or a picture of a pigeon.

“As an NFT collector, over time, one of the things you love is the randomness of, ‘Which one are you going to get?'” Zappitell said. “So that’s one of the exciting aspects.”

The NFTs sold in the machine rely on the Solana blockchain, which ensures carbon-neutral transactions. Additionally, the tokens can be purchased with fiat currency, while most others can only be bought via cryptocurrencies.

Neon started with $3 million in seed money and has announced that it hopes to create more vending machines in malls and other public spaces.

“That’s one of the really powerful messages of this, is how it’s using this old-world technology to enable the adoption of new world technology,” said Zappitell.
