Vietnam Collects 40% Of 2022-2023 Coffee Crops Despite Prolonged Rains

According to the Vietnamese Coffee Association, Nguyen Nam Hai, coffee farmers in Vietnam harvested an estimated 40% of the 2022 – 2023 crop as of early December despite concerns regarding bean quality in light of prolonged rains.

In coffee provinces such as Kon Tum, Gia Lao, and Dak Lak, extensive rains have been hitting this month with farmers’ bean-drying capacity still limited. It is predicted that output would be decreasing by over 10% from approximately 1.8 million tons in the 2021 – 2022 season with some farmers lessening their investments with increasing production costs mentioned by the Vietnamese Coffee Cocoa Association.

The report also says that production and yields are lower in farms that grow other profitable crops such as peppers and durian. This is due to coffee plants receiving less attention from growers.

Vietnam produces coffee on an estimated 710,000 hectares in over 20 provinces. This figure is an increase of over 67, 370 hectares from 2015. Vietnam recorded a record high of $3.9 billion from exports of their 2021 – 2022 season with over 1.68 million tons of coffee. Robusta beans made up over 89% of total exports. Vietnam is the world’s largest grower of robusta coffee beans.

For America’s biggest orange juice producer, Florida is predicted to have a record low in crops this season, which notes a potential global shortage of this product. Florida is expected to produce over 20 million boxes of oranges for the season of October 2022 – September 2023.  According to the US Department of Agriculture’s monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand report (WASDE), this figure would indicate a huge drop in data going back to 1913.
