Vivant Begins Partial Operations of Philippines’ First Utility-Scale Seawater Desalination Plant

Vivant Water has commenced partial operations of the Philippines’ first utility-scale seawater desalination plant in Cordova, Cebu. This milestone marks a significant step in addressing the water security issues in the region.

Key Details:

  • Initial Operations: The plant’s first skid has started operations, providing an initial five million liters of potable water daily to approximately 5,000 households in Metro Cebu.
  • Future Capacity: In its first phase, the desalination plant is projected to generate 20 million liters per day, enough to supply 20,000 households. The plant’s capacity can be expanded to produce up to 50 million liters per day.

Technological Aspects:

  • SWRO Technology: The plant uses seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology, a process that removes salt from seawater to produce clean drinking water.
  • Environmental Impact: The initiative aims to bridge the gap between water demand and supply, allowing over-extracted groundwater aquifers to replenish naturally.

Contract and Vision:

  • Long-Term Agreement: The plant has secured a 25-year contract to supply desalinated water to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD).
  • Pioneering Effort: Vivant Water president Jess Garcia highlighted the company’s role as pioneers in introducing seawater desalination as a third source of water in the Philippines, alongside traditional sources such as groundwater and surface water.

Comments:

  • Jess Garcia, Vivant Water President: “Vivant Water is extremely proud of this accomplishment and we are happy to offer an alternative solution to the water security issue in Cebu province, and ultimately the entire Philippines.”

The commencement of this desalination plant is a significant advancement for water infrastructure in the Philippines, providing a sustainable solution to meet growing water demands.
