Zuckerberg’s Strategic Pivot to AI: Meetings with LG and Samsung in Seoul

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, is making strategic moves to amplify the company’s focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) technologies. During a visit to Seoul, South Korea, as part of his three-nation Asian tour, Zuckerberg engaged in high-level discussions with the chiefs of LG Electronics and Samsung, signaling Meta’s ambition to deepen its involvement in AI and XR.

The Meta CEO’s itinerary included a notable meeting with LG Electronics’ CEO, William Cho, at the LG Twin Towers. The two-hour dialogue centered on the future of XR device development, highlighting the mutual interest in leveraging Meta’s cutting-edge technologies. Cho’s engagement with Meta’s latest VR and smart glasses technologies underscored a keen interest in exploring the potentials of large language models and on-device AI integration. LG expressed its intent to accelerate its XR ventures through strategic collaboration with Meta, aiming to harness augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality technologies.

Later, Zuckerberg’s rendezvous with Samsung Electronics’ Chairman Lee Jae-yong, although not detailed, is speculated to have explored avenues for Meta to potentially reduce its reliance on NVIDIA by discussing the production of Meta-exclusive AI chips. This move could mark a significant shift in Meta’s strategy, diversifying its technology partnerships and reinforcing its hardware capabilities for AI advancements.

Zuckerberg’s Asian tour, which also includes stops in Japan and India, is a clear indication of Meta’s proactive stance in forging partnerships with global tech giants. The discussions with LG and Samsung not only signify Meta’s intent to expand its technological ecosystem but also highlight the importance of collaboration in the fast-evolving AI and XR domains.
