Davao City Bypass Project Achieves 80% Tunneling Completion

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced that the Davao City Bypass Construction Project has reached an 80% completion milestone in its tunneling works. This project features the first long-distance mountain tunnel in the country, signifying a major infrastructure development in the region.

The DPWH, in collaboration with the Shimizu-Ulticon-Takenaka joint venture, has made significant progress in excavating the tunnel, now focusing on concrete lining and waterproofing. The tunnel, part of the 10.7-kilometer Contract Package I-1, is a key element of the 45.5-kilometer bypass project designed to improve transportation efficiency in the area.

The entire bypass is segmented into six packages, with Contract Package I-1 funded through a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), amounting to P13.23 billion. This segment is expected to be completed by early 2025.

The project’s comprehensive structure includes various contract packages, each contributing to the overall road network enhancement. Package I-1 is complemented by other segments involving significant construction works, including roads, bridges, and tunnels, with various funding sources and completion timelines.

The Davao City Bypass Project, costing an estimated P46.80 billion, is a strategic initiative aiming to bolster the region’s infrastructure and support economic growth. With the advanced stage of the tunneling works, the project is well on its way to its targeted completion, promising improved connectivity and transportation for Davao City.
