From “Poor Man’s Supper” to Global Superfood: Mega Sardines Earns Prestigious Wellness Badge

MANILA, Philippines — Mega Sardines, a long-time staple in Filipino households, has successfully rebranded itself from a budget-friendly “last resort” meal to a globally recognized health food. In 2025, the brand became the first and only canned sardine in the world to receive the “superfood” badge from the US-based Medical Wellness Association (MWA).

The distinction followed a rigorous seven-month evaluation of the brand’s nutritional quality and food safety standards. Produced by the 50-year-old Mega Prime Foods Inc., the product is now being hailed by medical experts as an optimal choice for combating metabolic diseases.

The Health Credentials

  • Nutritional Powerhouse: Mega Sardines are recognized for being high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids while containing zero carbohydrates and no chemical preservatives.
  • Catch-to-Can Process: The company employs a rapid 12-hour “catch-to-can” process, ensuring maximum freshness and nutrient retention.
  • Metabolic Health: MWA experts, including board member James Lafferty, stated that sardines are one of the strongest dietary options available to fight the global “metabolic crisis.”

Global Expansion and Sustainability

As the company celebrates its Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary) in 2026, it is scaling its international presence.

  • Global Outreach: Mega Prime is investing ₱5 million to participate in GulFood in Dubai, one of the world’s largest food trade shows, to mark the “Year of the Sardine.”
  • Export Growth: Since receiving the superfood badge, the brand has expanded its exports from 35 countries to 45.
  • Sustainable Fishing: The company remains committed to food security by strictly complying with the government-mandated three-month closed fishing season to allow stocks to replenish.

Despite the prestigious “superfood” status and rising global demand, CEO Michelle Tiu-Lim Chan reaffirmed the company’s commitment to affordability, noting that they have held prices steady since 2023 to support Filipino consumers during inflationary periods.
