SteelAsia to Install 8-MW Solar Rooftop on Cebu Mill—Industry’s Largest

COMPOSTELA, CEBU — SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the Philippines’ largest steel producer, has announced a landmark sustainability initiative with the installation of an 8-megawatt (MW) solar rooftop at its steel mill in Compostela, Cebu. Reported on April 27, 2026, this project is set to become the largest rooftop solar installation in the country’s steel industry.

The move marks a significant step in the company’s “Green Steel” initiative, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of heavy manufacturing in the Philippines.

The massive solar array is designed to integrate seamlessly into the high-intensity energy requirements of a steel rolling mill:

  • Energy Capacity: The 8-MW system is expected to generate approximately 12 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy annually.
  • Carbon Offset: Once operational, the installation will offset an estimated 8,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year—equivalent to planting over 140,000 trees.
  • Operational Savings: By self-generating a portion of its power, SteelAsia expects to significantly lower its electricity costs, which traditionally represent one of the highest overheads in steel production.

SteelAsia’s Compostela mill is already one of the most advanced in the region. The addition of solar power complements its existing eco-friendly technologies:

  • Efficient Reheating: The mill utilizes advanced reheating furnaces that minimize fuel consumption.
  • Zero-Waste Goal: The facility employs a closed-loop water system to prevent discharge into local waterways and recycles mill scale (a byproduct) for other industrial uses.
  • Local Production: By producing steel locally in Cebu, SteelAsia also reduces the “transportation carbon” associated with importing construction materials from overseas.

SteelAsia Chairman and CEO Benjamin Yao emphasized that the investment is about future-proofing the Filipino steel industry.

“We are proving that heavy industry and environmental stewardship can go hand-in-hand. This 8-MW solar project is just the beginning as we look to transition our other mills across the country to renewable energy sources.” — Benjamin Yao, SteelAsia Chairman

The project comes at a time when global steel markets are increasingly demanding “green-certified” materials for high-end infrastructure and sustainable building projects. SteelAsia’s investment positions it as a preferred supplier for developers who are aiming for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in their Philippine projects.

Construction of the rooftop array is expected to be completed by the second half of 2026, serving as a blueprint for the company’s other facilities in Bulacan, Batangas, and Davao.
