Retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, who spent almost a full year in space aboard the International Space Station (ISS), recently dropped his own NFT collection on the same day as the International Day of Human Space Flight. Kelly’s collection — titled “Dreams Out of this World” — consists of 3,333 tokens featuring Scott himself in a various mix of attributes and destinations.
“I’m a big believer in technology. I was really interested in cryptocurrencies and the blockchain—not early enough, but at least the last few years,” the veteran explorer explained. “I just look at this form of technology as another way to explore. In this case, it’s exploring the metaverse and virtual worlds.”
When describing the collection, Kelly noted it as “digital representations of the dreams and the thoughts I’ve had when I was in space, but also traveling around the Earth and the parts of the planet that I’ve seen up close.” Through his NFTs, he hopes to bring awareness to emerging technologies.
Kelly is also set to auction three single-edition NFTs, which will be paired with physical space memorabilia. An NFT with one of the astronaut’s worn spacesuits will have a starting price of 3 ETH (around $9,150), another token with space gloves will start at 2 ETH (around $6,100), and one with his command cap is expected to go for 1 ETH (around $3,050).
Proceeds from the NFT collection will go to the Global Empowerment Mission, which is a nonprofit supporting Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. Kelly’s NFT project was done in collaboration with the NFT startup Orange Comet. The astronaut also expressed that he hopes to do more NFT drops in the future.
“Similar to space travel, the metaverse might not seem accessible to the masses at present time. In addition to rekindling interest in space, I am most honored to be able to assist the people of Ukraine during their time of crisis by donating 100% of net proceeds from the initial sale to the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM),” elaborated Kelly. “My hope is that this NFT collection not only inspires those who opt into auction, but also uplift those who are going through the darkest time in human history.”
“It’s been an incredible journey to partner with a visionary like Scott Kelly on his first NFT project. He’s experienced the world from a very rare perspective, which offers another level of unique ingenuity and imagination that our team was able to translate within the NFT creative,” added Orange Comet CEO Dave Broome. “We’re also honored that along with Scott we will be donating the proceeds from this NFT to humanitarian aid in Ukraine. This project is rooted in inspiration and hope – messages that we truly need in the world right now.”
