PhilCare and Comm&Sense Launch “RESTArt” Art Workshops for Mental Health

MANILA, Philippines — In a proactive response to the growing mental health challenges in the Philippines, healthcare provider PhilCare and strategic communications firm Comm&Sense have launched a joint initiative titled RESTArt. Announced on Saturday, April 25, 2026, the program is a series of creative and performing arts workshops designed to foster emotional resilience and holistic wellness through artistic expression.

The initiative aligns with the Department of Health’s (DOH) findings that approximately 3.6 million Filipinos are currently living with mental, neurological, or substance use disorders, highlighting an urgent need for community-based support programs.

RESTArt translates global research into practical, engaging activities for the community. The workshop series encompasses a wide range of creative disciplines:

  • Visual and Decorative Arts: Activities such as flower arrangement provide a tactile and meditative outlet for stress relief.
  • Performing Arts: Sessions in dance, singing, and acting encourage participants to process complex emotions and share personal stories.
  • Physical Wellness: Yoga and movement workshops focus on the mind-body connection to help participants rediscover balance.

The program draws heavily from a landmark World Health Organization (WHO) evidence review that examined over 3,000 studies worldwide. The WHO findings established that engaging in the arts can:

  1. Promote Health: Acting as a preventative measure against mental decline and isolation.
  2. Support Management: Assisting in the treatment of established mental health conditions.
  3. Build Resilience: Enhancing the ability of individuals to process trauma and daily stressors.

Unlike standard recreational classes, RESTArt integrates professional medical oversight:

  • Expert Facilitation: PhilCare will deploy licensed mental health professionals to every workshop.
  • Guided Reflection: Facilitators lead structured reflection sessions before and after activities to help participants articulate their experiences.
  • Emotional Safety: Professionals are on-site to provide immediate support to anyone experiencing strong emotional responses during the creative process.

Jaeger Tanco, President and CEO of PhilCare, emphasized that modern healthcare must evolve beyond physical ailments.

“PhilCare believes healthcare must address the whole person: body, mind, and emotions. Programs like RESTArt harness creative expression to help people process emotions and rediscover balance, while mental health professionals ensure participants receive proper support.”

Andy Saracho, President of Comm&Sense, added that communication is most effective when it creates meaningful human experiences.

“RESTArt reflects our belief that communications can go beyond messaging to create experiences that genuinely improve people’s lives. It is a platform where people can express themselves, connect with others, and rediscover pathways toward personal well-being.”

As the Philippines continues to navigate the long-term mental health impacts of recent global and domestic stressors—including economic volatility and climate-related concerns—initiatives like RESTArt provide a scalable model for accessible mental health care. By removing the clinical stigma often associated with therapy and replacing it with communal creativity, the program aims to reach a broader demographic of Filipinos looking for emotional support.
