Strong Sales Power Robinsons Retail’s Q1 Core Profits, But Higher Costs Bite Bottom Line

MANILA, Philippines — Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc. (RRHI) kicked off the first quarter of 2026 with a solid boost in core earnings, fueled by double-digit sales growth and a steady rise in consumer demand. However, the Gokongwei-led retail giant faced a dip in its final bottom line as higher financing costs and market volatility took a toll.

According to its latest financial disclosure, RRHI’s core net earnings climbed 6.2% to ₱1.3 billion. This growth reflects the company’s ability to maintain tight operating discipline even as the retail landscape shifts.

The company’s net sales surged 10.3%, reaching ₱52.8 billion. This performance was driven by several key factors:

  • A healthy 4.1% blended same-store sales growth.
  • An increase in average “basket sizes” (customers spending more per visit).
  • Aggressive store network expansion and the full-quarter contribution of Premiumbikes.

While the top line looked bright, the attributable net income for equity holders fell by 35.6% to ₱489 million. The company attributed this decline to non-operational pressures, specifically higher interest expenses linked to share buyback financing, acquisition-related borrowings, and losses from equity investments.

Despite the positive sales momentum, Robinsons Retail President and CEO Stanley Co expressed a note of caution. He pointed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a growing concern that is beginning to ripple through the economy.

“Ongoing geopolitical risks are already translating into higher operating costs and softer consumer confidence as we enter the second quarter,” Co stated. He emphasized that the company remains focused on “executing well in the areas within our control” to navigate these uncertainties.

As of March 2026, RRHI’s massive footprint includes 2,782 stores nationwide—ranging from supermarkets and drugstores to department stores and specialty shops—alongside over 2,100 franchised branches of The Generics Pharmacy (TGP).
