St. Luke’s Medical Center Unveils “Smart Hospital” Blueprint for Quezon City Expansion

QUEZON CITY, Philippines — In a major move to redefine healthcare delivery, St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) has topped off its new 13-story North Hospital Building in Quezon City. The facility, scheduled for completion in 2027, serves as a “new blueprint” for smart hospitals, focusing on centralized services and advanced digital integration to minimize the physical and administrative strain on patients.

The expansion is designed to consolidate nearly 80 percent of the hospital’s high-traffic existing services into a single, highly efficient structure.

The core philosophy of the new building is to eliminate the “building-to-building” navigation that often plagues large medical complexes:

  • Centralized Services: Laboratory tests, imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutic areas will be housed within the same 13-story tower.
  • Separated Traffic: The design includes separate internal flows for inpatients and outpatients to ensure privacy and reduce hallway congestion.
  • Smart Navigation: The facility will be a “smart building,” utilizing digital systems to guide patients through their healthcare journey with minimal friction.

While the expansion doesn’t significantly increase total bed capacity, it reconfigures the space to meet modern demands:

  1. Patient Rooms: The building will add 132 new patient rooms, with a specific focus on high-demand private rooms and luxury suites.
  2. Advanced Monitoring: Critical care areas, including operating rooms and ICUs, will feature centralized monitoring and “smart hospital” technology to improve real-time patient oversight.
  3. Physical Linkage: The North Building will be physically connected to the existing hospital complex through internal passageways, creating a seamless environment for staff and emergency transport.

The Quezon City project is part of a broader modernization strategy for St. Luke’s.

  • Parañaque Expansion: SLMC is also planning a new hospital in Aseana City, Parañaque, which is expected to add 500 beds to the network by 2030.
  • Addressing Capacity Constraints: Dr. Deborah Ignacia Ona, SLMC Senior VP and Medical Director, noted that the new configuration will help the hospital better manage peak periods and specialized care requests.

“It’s made in such a way that we wanted to be a smart building so if you’re a patient, it’s going to be very easy for you to navigate the hospital,” Ona said during the topping-off ceremony held on April 20, 2026.

As healthcare costs and patient expectations rise, hospitals are under pressure to provide more than just medical outcomes; they must provide a seamless experience. By integrating technology and architectural design, St. Luke’s is positioning itself at the forefront of the “Smart Hospital” movement in Southeast Asia, aiming to prove that efficiency and high-quality care can go hand-in-hand.
