Philippine Airlines to Launch Direct Manila-Chicago Flights in November

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to expand its footprint in the United States with the launch of direct flights between Manila and Chicago starting November 2026.

The announcement, made on Thursday, April 16, marks the flag carrier’s sixth destination in the U.S. and its first foray into the American Midwest. The move is seen as a strategic response to the growing demand from the Filipino-American community in Illinois and neighboring states, who currently rely on connecting flights through the West Coast or Middle Eastern hubs.

Chicago joins an elite list of PAL’s North American gateways, further solidifying the airline’s position as the only carrier offering non-stop service between the Philippines and the United States.

  • The Route: The new service will operate out of O’Hare International Airport (ORD), one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, providing seamless connections to various points in the U.S. East Coast and Canada.
  • Frequency: PAL plans to start with a three-times-weekly schedule, utilizing its fleet of long-range Airbus A350-900 or Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
  • Flight Time: Passengers can expect a journey of approximately 16 to 17 hours, significantly cutting down travel time for those bound for the Midwest.

The launch comes at a time when the aviation industry is facing significant headwinds due to global fuel price volatility and the ongoing national energy emergency in the Philippines.

  • Market Confidence: Industry analysts view the “November takeoff” as a sign of PAL’s resilience and confidence in the long-haul market, despite a recent report from Oxford Economics identifying the Philippines as highly vulnerable to an aviation slump.
  • Cargo Potential: Beyond passenger traffic, the Chicago route is expected to boost belly-hold cargo capacity, facilitating faster trade of electronics, garments, and perishable goods between the two nations.

For the estimated 150,000 Filipinos living in the Chicago metropolitan area, the direct flight serves as a vital bridge to home. “This new route is more than just a business expansion; it’s a commitment to our kababayans in the Midwest who have long asked for a direct link to Manila,” a PAL representative stated.

With tickets expected to go on sale in the coming weeks, the Manila-Chicago route is poised to become a cornerstone of PAL’s international network, complementing its existing services to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Honolulu, and Guam.
